������������: Geert, wie sieht dein typischer Arbeitstag als Team Lead Software Engineering aus?

Geert: Wenn ich von zu Hause arbeite, gehe ich normalerweise meinen Kalender durch und bereite alle Termine vor, die ich an diesem Tag habe. Dann muss ich mich um die Aufgaben kümmern, die ich an diesem Tag zu erledigen habe. Und die meiste Zeit bin ich in Meetings. Normalerweise beginnen wir mit unserer täglichen Teambesprechung, um sicherzustellen, dass alles nach Plan läuft und es keine Blocker gibt.

Als Team Lead habe ich auch 1:1-Gespräche mit meinen Teammitgliedern. Dazwischen versuche ich, den Teammitgliedern zu helfen, sie zu unterstützen, dafür zu sorgen, dass die Aufgaben auf dem neuesten Stand sind und all diese kleinen Dinge.

������������: Ich glaube, nicht jeder weiß, was Software Engineering wirklich ist. Vielleicht kannst du uns das erklären und wie die Aufgaben deines Teams im Einzelnen aussehen.

Geert: Es gibt jetzt vier Entwicklungsteams bei ������������. Mein Team heißt Pied Piper. Software-Engineering ist dort ein ziemlich wichtiger Teil ... sonst könnten wir natürlich keine brauchbare Software liefern.

Aber die Entwicklungsteams bei ������������ sind nicht nur Entwicklungsteams. Neben den Entwicklern gibt es auch einen Quality-Engineering-Teil, das übernimmt der Team Lead, und einen Product Owner. Und jeder Teil ist sehr wichtig in unserem Prozess, Software zu liefern.

������������: Als Softwareentwickler könntest du fast überall arbeiten. Warum hast du dich für ������������ entschieden?

Geert: Das ist eine längere Geschichte: Ich bin Niederländer, habe also in den Niederlanden gelebt und bin irgendwie in Südspanien gelandet, wo ich etwa 20 Jahre lang gelebt habe. Ich war freiberuflicher Entwickler und Berater. Und zum richtigen Zeitpunkt meldete sich eine Personalvermittlerin bei mir, und ich war bereit für eine Veränderung.

Ich bin zwei Tage nach München gefahren, weil alle Unternehmen hier in Deutschland waren. Zuerst hatte ich am Morgen ein Interview mit einem anderen Unternehmen. Aber ich wusste sehr schnell, dass ich dort nicht arbeiten wollte. Sie waren ziemlich streng "deutsch" (lacht) und ich wollte mehr "laid back".

Danach bin ich zum Vorstellungsgespräch bei ������������ gegangen und am Ende haben sie gesagt: "hier ist der Vertrag", du kannst ihn unterschreiben", was natürlich sehr schmeichelhaft war.

Dann - das ist die Wahrheit - bin ich in den Biergarten gegangen und habe ein paar Bier getrunken, um darüber nachzudenken. Denn es war ein großer Schritt für mich. Am nächsten Morgen habe ich den Vertrag unterschrieben und die anderen geplanten Vorstellungsgespräche abgesagt.

������������: Du bist also wegen ������������ nach Deutschland gekommen?

Geert: Ja. Und es war wirklich ein großer Schritt, weil ich zu dieser Zeit eine neue Beziehung mit meiner Freundin angefangen habe. Sie ist Spanierin und ich konnte nicht sicher sein, dass sie mit mir nach München kommen würde, als ich im Januar 2020 anfing. Aber ein halbes Jahr später war sie dann auch hier.

������������: Es hat also alles geklappt.

Geert: Ja, ihr gefällt es hier auch. Ich meine, München ist wirklich eine schöne Stadt.

������������: Das ist eine gute Beschreibung. �ܳܰ�ü���� zu den Innovationen - denn das ist im Grunde das, was die IT-Teams bei ������������ möglich machen: Welche (digitale) Innovation würde dir denn das Leben leichter machen?

Geert: Ich denke, was das Leben vieler Menschen einfacher machen würde, wäre die Möglichkeit, von überall aus arbeiten zu können. Jedes Unternehmen sollte diese Möglichkeit für Jobs, die remote erledigt werden können, anbieten. Ich werde im Mai einen dreiwöchigen "Workation" machen. Ich freue mich sehr darauf, für ������������ zu arbeiten und gleichzeitig die Sonne und den Strand zu genießen.

������������: Klingt gut! Als Softwareentwickler für eine App: Hast du eine Lieblingsapp oder einen Tipp für eine wirklich nützliche App?

Geert: Die ������������ App ist sehr gut, die kann ich wirklich empfehlen. (lacht) Was ich auch viel nutze, sind einige Multimedia-Apps wie Netflix und Prime Video. Aber ich nutze auch einige arbeitsbezogene Apps, mit denen ich sehr zufrieden bin: Zum Beispiel Todoist. Da schreibe ich alles rein. Das hilft mir, organisiert zu bleiben.

������������: Ich habe deinen Hund im Hintergrund gesehen, und ich vermute, dass du jetzt gleich in deiner Mittagspause mit ihr spazieren gehen musst. Was machst du sonst noch, wenn du nicht arbeitest?

Geert: Ja, sie heißt Moni und ich muss mindestens zweimal am Tag mit ihr Gassi gehen. Vielleicht kann ich sie auch mal mit ins Büro nehmen.

Außerdem versuche ich viel zu joggen und ich fahre gerne Mountainbike. Aber um ehrlich zu sein, bin ich noch mehr an das spanische Wetter gewöhnt. Dort bin ich jedes Wochenende mountainbiken gegangen. Die Strecken hier in Bayern sind wirklich schön, aber das Wetter motiviert nicht so oft.

Und ins Fitnessstudio gehe ich auch. Die Tatsache, dass ������������ uns mit einer Mitgliedschaft im Fitnessstudio unterstützt, motiviert mich sehr. Ich finde es toll, wie ������������ diese Dinge unterstützt.

������������: Hast du denn einen ������������ Lieblingsmoment?

Geert: Jetzt gerade läuft ja die 6. Edition des Hackottons und basteln wir an einer Art Webshop, in dem man ������������-Produkte kaufen kann. Das ist etwas ganz anderes als das was ich sonst so mache. Ich arbeite mit einem Designer und jemandem aus einem anderen IT-Team zusammen und wir entwickeln T-Shirts, die ihr dann irgendwann kaufen könnt. Das ist ein wirklich schönes Projekt, das Spaß macht.

Aber es gibt auch eine Menge großer Momente, die auf uns zukommen. Wir wachsen jetzt sehr stark in der IT. Wir werden mehr Entwickler ins Team bekommen und das bedeutet zum Beispiel auch für mein Team, dass wir es aufteilen und ein neues zusätzliches Team aufbauen werden. Ich mag diese Art der Organisation einfach.

������������: Dinge zu organisieren, ist also dein Ding?

Geert: Ja, ich denke schon.

������������: Hast du einen Tipp für alle, die nicht so gut im Organisieren sind? Vielleicht hast du einen Lifehack?

Geert: Im Grunde genommen ganz einfach: To-Do-Listen erstellen und diese Listen dann organisieren. Ohne To-Do-Listen wäre mein Leben viel chaotischer. Ich denke, das ist mein Life-Hack, um organisiert zu bleiben.

������������: So, Geert what does your typical workday as a Team Lead Software Engineering look like?

Geert: When I’m working from home, I usually go through my calendar and prepare all the appointments I have that day. Then I have to manage the tasks I have to do that day. And most of the time I am in meetings. Usually, we start with our daily team meeting, just to make sure that everything is on track, that there are no blockers. And as a Team Lead I also have 1:1 with my team members. In between I try to do some other work, helping the team members, support them, make sure that the tasks are up to date and all that kind of little things.

������������: I think not everyone knows what software engineering really is. Maybe you could tell us that and how the tasks of your team look like in particular.

�ұ�����:��So software engineering basically means programming, but it is more than that. It also involves designing, developing, maintaining and testing our apps and services which we built in house.

There are four development teams at ������������ now. My team is called Pied Piper. Software engineering is actually a pretty important part there …otherwise we couldn’t deliver usable software of course.

But the development teams in ������������, they are not only development teams. Besides the developers there is a quality engineering part as a team lead and there is also a product owner in there. All together we are one team. And every part is very important in our process to deliver software.

������������: As a software engineer you could work like in almost every place. Why did you choose ������������?

Geert: That’s a longer story: I am Dutch, so I used to live in the Netherlands and somehow, I ended up in the South of Spain and I lived there for like 20 years. I was a freelance developer and consultant. At some point I thought: „I’d rather want to work in a bigger company with a lot of colleagues.” And at the right point there was a recruiter that contacted me and I said „why not?“ I was up for a change.

I went two days to Munich because all of the companies were here in Germany. I also did a pre-selection, so I knew a little bit about ������������ and thought the job sounded interesting First I had a meeting with another company in the morning. But I knew really quickly I don’t want to work there. They were pretty strict „German“ (chuckles) and I wanted more „lay back“.

After that I went to the interview with ������������ and there I did my interviews and in the end they said „here is the contract, you can sign it“, which was of course flattering. Then - this is the truth - I went to the Biergarten and had a few beers to think it over. Because it was a big step for me. The next morning I signed it and cancelled the other scheduled interviews.

But ������������ just felt the right place and so I did it, I moved from Spain to Munich. And I have no regrets.

������������: So, you came to Germany for ������������?

Geert: Yes. And it really was a big step because at that time I started a new relationship with my girlfriend. She is Spanish and I couldn’t be sure she would come to Munich with me when I started in January 2020. But half a year later she was here as well.

ottonova: So everything worked out.

Geert: Yes, she likes it here as well. I mean, Munich is really nice city.

Even as a big city it really feels like a village, and that is the magic of Munich.

������������: That is a good description. Coming back to innovations – because that is basically what the IT teams at ������������ make possible: Which (digital) innovation would make your life easier?

Geert: I’m not sure if it is an innovation as such… But I guess what would make the life of a lot of people easier would be able to work from everywhere. Every company should offer that possibility for jobs that can be remotely done. I will do a three-week “workcation” in May. I’m really looking forward to working for ������������ and enjoying the sun and the beach.

������������: Sounds nice! As a software engineer for an app: do you have a favorite app or a tip for a really cool app?

Geert: I’ve got the ������������ app and I can recommend that one. (chuckles) What I also use a lot are some multimedia apps like Netflix and Prime Video. But I do also use some work-related apps I’m really happy with: For example to-do-lists. I put everything in there. That helps me to stay organized.

������������: Well, I saw your dog in the background and I guess you have to go for a walk with her during your lunch break. What else do you do when you are not working?

Geert: Yes, she is called Moni and I have to walk with her at least two times a day. Maybe I can bring her sometime to the office.

Beside that I try to jog a lot and I like mountain-biking. But to be honest I’m still more used to the Spanish weather. There I went every weekend mountain-biking. The tracks here in Bavaria are really nice but the weather does not really motivate that often.

And I also go to the gym. The fact ������������ supports us with a gym membership does motivate. I love how ������������ supports these things.

������������: So, do you have a favorite ������������ moment?

Geert: My favorite moments are the Hackottons. I love to organize things like that and to partizipate with people you normally don’t work with.

Right now, in the 6^th edition of the Hackotton, we do a kind of webshop where you can buy ������������-products. Totally different and I’m working with a designer and someone from another IT team and we are developing t-shirts and you guys can buy it at some point. That is a really nice project and let’s see how it goes.

But there are also a lot of big moments coming up. Now we are growing a lot in the IT and that means we get more developers and that also means for example for my team that we will split our team and build a new one. I really love that kind of organization.

������������: To organize things, that's your thing?

Geert: Yes, I think so.

������������: Do you have a tip for anybody who is not so good at organizing? Maybe you have a lifehack?

Geert: Basically, creating to-do-lists and then organizing those lists. Without to-do-lists my life would be much more chaotic. I guess that is my lifehack to stay organized.
